The primary aim of this course is to assess the current challenges facing both new and established democracies around the world. It will consider not only the common issues that democracies address in everyday life, which are typically the focus of political science, but also the existential threats they face nowadays: populist leaders, movements, parties and governments; illiberalism, intolerance and antipluralism; policy and bureaucracy dismantling.
