Lessons from the Past and Perspectives for the Future
In this seminar, Prof. Paulo Figueiredo (FGV EBAPE) and Prof. Edmund Amann (Leiden University and John Hopkins), two highly experienced international scholars, will talk about “Innovation, Competitiveness and Development in Latin America. Lessons from the Past and Perspectives for the Future” title of their new book, published by Oxford University Press. This seminar is an opportunity to dive deep into this theme and to discuss with them some of Latin America's pressing issues, a comprehensive insight into why Latin America has struggled to grow and close the development gap with the advanced industrial economies. Moreover, a wide-ranging analysis of Latin America's growth and development challenges based on evidence from across the region, including major economies and smaller, often overlooked, cases.
Prof. Paulo Figueiredo is part of the faculty for MSc & PhD in Administration, Professional Master´s in Public Administration (MAP) and Executive Master´s in Business Administration (MEX) at FGV EBAPE. He has invited Prof. Edmund Amann to examine specific questions, including: What are the best forms of policy intervention to help Latin America overcome its structural impediments and seize emerging global opportunities? What institutional obstacles prevent the implementation of effective policies? How could the region avoid missing opportunities regarding new windows of technological, learning, demand, and institutional opportunities in the future?
The event will be held in English, but participants will be able to ask their questions in Portuguese.

Paulo Figueiredo is full professor of technology and innovation management, Brazilian School of Public and Business Administration (EBAPE), Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV). Senior Research Associate, University of Oxford, Department of International Development, United Kingdom. Research Associate, Centre of New Developmentalism, São Paulo School of Business Administration (EAESP), Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV). He holds a PhD in science and technology studies from the University of Sussex Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), United Kingdom. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Technological Learning, Innovation and Development (IJTLID), United Kingdom. Member of the Techno-scientific Council, The Eldorado Research Institute, São Paulo, Brazil. In 1999, he set up the Research Programme on Technological Learning and Industrial Innovation in Brazil at EBAPE / FGV.
Edmund Amann is Adjunct Professor at SAIS Europe and Professor of Brazilian Studies at Leiden University. Reader in Development Economics, University of Manchester. Consultant at the Inter-American Development Bank; has served as J.P. Lemann Visiting Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; was previously a research fellow at St. Antony's College at the University of Oxford.
