Can mainstream theories of urban spatial structure from the Global North explain the trajectory of Latin American cities?

Latin American critical urban theorists would argue against this, contending that the region's unique social and economic historical events have produced an urban development trajectory distinct from cities in Europe and the United States. A refined theory of the trajectory of urban spatial structure in Latin American cities needs to consider the urbanization factors specific to the region. In this seminar, we will discuss two studies that looked at recent changes in the urban spatial structure of Latin American metropolises, focusing on the cases of the São Paulo Metropolitan Area and major Mexican cities. This will be an opportunity to reflect on the findings, discuss the consequences for local development, and exchange ideas on a critical research agenda for the region on this topic.
