"Macunaíma" by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade: 50 Years
"Macunaíma" by Joaquim Pedro de Andrade: 50 Years
"In the depths of the virgin bush was born Macunaíma, hero of our people. He was black and son of fear of the night. There was a moment when the silence was so great listening to the murmurs of Uraricoera, that the Indian tapanhumas gave birth to an ugly child. This child they called Macunaíma ".
After two years of writing, cuts, additions and revisions, on July 26, 1928, "Macunaíma: the hero without any character" was finally born, a masterpiece by Mario de Andrade and the Brazilian Modernist Movement.
Four decades later, on November 3, 1969, after properly analyzed and edited by the censorship in force at the time, the feature film “Macunaíma” arrives on the big screens to consecrate its director, Joaquim Pedro de Andrade, and become one of the Cinema Novo's milestones.
