Check out the interview with Henrique Vitta, student of the Professional Master's Degree in Public Policy and Management (MPGPP) at the São Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP) and a professional in the field of educational projects.

What separate subjects did you take?

I initially took the discipline "Organizational Change and Public Management", in January 2016, offered as a summer course for the Professional Master's at the time.

What was the motivation for “trying out” the master's degree through separate disciplines? Why did you choose to take the courses?

I had completed my graduation the previous year, having gone through experiences where I had had practical actions in a leadership position in student movements (FEA Júnior USP, a junior management consulting company of which I had been president, and USP Debate, an extension project of university that I co-founded and led during its early years), followed by a professional experience in management consulting. He was determined to work in the public sector and was getting to know the possibilities for that. I contacted different organizations, took courses and participated in events in different spaces to broaden my view of the existing possibilities. I looked for FGV because it is an organization that is a reference in public management and the idea of having contact with a professional master's degree attracted me a lot,

What was the importance of having contact with the master's proposal before joining?

It fulfilled the objectives perfectly. I had a vision of what the professional master's degree would be like and at the same time I managed to meet people who had similar interests and were working in the sector.

Right at the beginning of the disciplines, what caught your attention the most?

FGV's structure and the number of practical actions the organization performs with governments, as well as the number of professors who are references in their area of expertise. In the specific case of that moment, it was interesting to learn more about impact projects, such as the implementation of "Poupatempo", a topic discussed in the subject offered, and the history of teachers like Bresser Pereira, who colleagues had taught.

In the general context, what was it like to participate in the separate subjects? Talk a little about the format, the most important thing you learned, etc.

At that time, the course allowed me to have contact with public management theories applied to practice and broadened my view of possibilities for professional performance. It helped to consolidate my intention to act in the practice of public action and to do a professional master's degree after relevant experiences in the area. This really happened years later, when I joined the MPGPP in 2021, which I have just completed.

Namely: a few months after that period in which I took the discipline, specifically in June 2016, I joined the Public Management Trainee program at Vetor Brasil and worked at the Secretariat of Education of Ceará. Since then, I have had several other professional experiences in the educational field, working with different organizations and governments throughout Brazil, and on other fronts with the public sector, having also had an electoral experience when I ran for councilor, in 2020. Between 2021 and 2022 I decided to return to the idea of deepening my knowledge of public management and started a professional master's degree.

How did the separate course contribute to your professional work in the area of Education?

I recently started a professional role at the Education Department of Pará, enhanced by the MPGPP experience. The invitation came from the current secretary of education of the state, Rossieli Soares, with whom I had contact as a professor in elective discipline that at the beginning of the course, in 2021, when I was leading education in São Paulo and we had the discipline available. The experience reinforces what I reported: the master's degree provided the integration of theory to practice and provided contact with projects and people who experienced great challenges in governments. My dissertation had as object of study the education of São Paulo and Professor Rossieli, who participated in my panel, invited me to act in the challenge of education in Pará that he had just started.
