Social Currency Repository

This project involves mapping social currencies that circulate (or used to circulate) in Brazil and, in a second stage, in Latin America. It also involves building and maintaining a database to store this mapping and make it available to the practical and academic community. Ideally, there will be a Wikipedia-style consultation of the coins registered in the database.

According to Singer (2009), social currencies are "an instrument of exchange and means of payment created and operated by self-managed associations". Freire (2011) adds that the circulation of these currencies is restricted to a certain geographical region and, because their circulation is restricted, they have three main objectives: to favor local consumption of local resources; to boost exchanges within the local economy; and to review the values associated with exchanges, such as trust and valuing human beings, as well as fairer and more sustainable marketing rules.

In Brazil, by granting micro-credits in social currency, community banks stimulate the local economy, social and financial inclusion, conscious consumption and also the political debate regarding the greater participation of people in community decisions, local development, solidarity, among others (DINIZ et al., 2014; SINGER, 2009; MELO NETO and MAGALHÃES, 2008).
