Study proposes integrated framework to boost entrepreneurial practices.
An article by Dario Vedana, a doctoral candidate at FGV EAESP , and Tales Andreassi, a professor at FGV EAESP , published in GV Executivo magazine , presents an integrated framework to support the development of Entrepreneurial Universities and strengthen their role in Innovation Ecosystems.
This study stems from the central challenge faced by higher education institutions: although recognized for their ability to articulate ecosystems and connect multiple stakeholders, universities—especially public universities and foundations—operate under slow decision-making structures, marked by controls, norms, and compliance processes that hinder performance aligned with the pace of entrepreneurship. Formalizing partnerships, agreements, and projects is often a complex process, which limits innovative initiatives.
Based on a systematic literature review, the authors sought to answer the question: what makes a university entrepreneurial? The study analyzed 83 academic articles published between 2000 and 2023, covering topics such as Entrepreneurship Education, Entrepreneurial Ecosystem, Innovation Ecosystem, and entrepreneurial action.
The result is the Integrated Entrepreneurial University Framework, which brings together:
External inputs, such as businesses, government, community, and support networks;
Internal pillars, involving campus management, teaching, research and outreach;
Components of entrepreneurial and innovation ecosystems;
Results generated, related to the creation of knowledge, technology, and new ventures.
The model highlights that education should combine traditional methodologies and emerging practices—such as design thinking, lean startup, and simulations—to develop both entrepreneurial intention and action. In research, strategic partnerships with the public and private sectors can broaden scientific and technological impact. In outreach, connections with the market and the community strengthen collaborative networks and accelerate the emergence of opportunities.
By offering a holistic view of the entrepreneurial process within universities, the framework contributes to managers, professors, entrepreneurs, and organizational leaders who seek to structure more dynamic and innovative environments capable of leading ecosystems.
