PROJECT LAB - Game "Transforming Scenarios to work on unconscious biases"
Project title: Transformative Scenarios Game to work on unconscious biases
Authors: Daniel Martins de Albuquerque, Fernanda Gonzaga, Jéssica Maria Mariano Cardoso, Luciana Marin Ribas and Ricardo Stary Rodrigues
Class: 1
Period: April to September 2024
Project goal: To promote reflection on the importance of diversity and awareness of unconscious biases by creating an interactive game that could be applied in different contexts, such as schools and companies, to approach the topic in a creative and engaging way.
Development method: The project was developed within the Project Lab discipline, starting with the exchange of ideas and the identification of the central theme. The group worked on various versions of the game, carrying out tests and discussions to perfect it. The final version was applied to an undergraduate class, using a fictitious layer to exercise creativity before revealing the game's main objective: to stimulate reflection on how we form perceptions and make decisions based on unconscious prejudices.
Result: The deliverable was an interactive game about unconscious biases, which challenged participants to connect stories and images, exploring how we shape our perceptions. It generated important reflections among players, who reported a positive impact in both personal and professional contexts. The group considers the game to be close to the expected result and is working on improvements and new applications.
Testimonials from Business Administration students who took part in the application:
"I felt it was a very good introduction, playing the game I didn't realize we were going into this subject, but I thought it was a great way to approach it."
"I loved it, I found it very interesting to understand the biases behind various behaviors and premeditated beliefs."
"The discussion made me think about the impact I can have within my personal and professional context."
Learnings: The group developed leadership skills, collaboration and the integration of individual competencies to create a meaningful project. They learned how to work with a sensitive topic in a creative and thought-provoking way, as well as how to engage participants in deep reflection. The process also helped them to align ideas and overcome challenges, such as balancing the lightness of the playful format with the seriousness of the topic.
