Academy of Management: Students participate in global management conference in the US

The Academy of Management (AOM) Annual Meeting , held last month in Chicago, United States, had the largest delegation to date from the São Paulo School of Business Administration (FGV EAESP) at the event. Twelve students from the Professional Doctorate in Administration (DBA) and three professors participated intensely in the activities, Miguel Caldas, Maria José Tonelli and João Lins . The event brought together some of the most renowned researchers and professionals in the area of administration and management.

Among the participants, student Lívia Kuga highlighted the importance of being present at such an important event. “At AOM, it was possible to receive tips for those who are just starting their doctorate and learn about the best practices for publishing in ‘top journals’, highly prestigious scientific journals. In addition, the accessibility of the big names in academia present at the event was impressive, providing opportunities to interact with renowned experts and absorb knowledge directly from the source”, she commented.

Lívia also highlighted the opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice, one of the major gaps identified during the event. “There is still a considerable distance between the ‘research gaps’ and the execution in practice. This creates an excellent opportunity for us, who come from the market, to contribute with research suggestions that can truly bridge the gap between science and practice,” she stated. However, she warned that there is still skepticism about the ability of market professionals to be high-level academic researchers. “It is up to us to conquer this space, following academic rigor and bringing valuable insights to practice,” she added.

Mariela Fontenelle Assis , PhD in Administration and Organizational Development consultant, was another active participant in the event. She presented a paper based on her doctoral thesis, developed together with her advisor, Professor Thomaz Wood Jr. “I have participated in the event annually since 2018, when I joined the DBA. The lessons learned and contacts made at AOM over the years have been extremely valuable to my career. This year, the exchange of feedback during the presentation of my paper was enriching, helping to improve the work for future publication in high-impact journals,” said Mariela.

In addition to the presentations and panels, the event provided DBA students with the opportunity to interact with researchers from around the world and from different lines of research, broadening their perspectives and enriching their academic work. The doctoral students attended panels with prominent names such as Jay Barney, David J. Teece, Denise Rousseau and Henry Mintzberg , in addition to participating in doctoral consortia, where they received direct guidance from editors and reviewers of important journals.

The Academy of Management Annual Meeting, one of the largest global conferences dedicated to research and practice in management, continues to be an important milestone in the training of FGV EAESP doctoral students, consolidating the institution's commitment to academic excellence and the integration of theory and practice.
