Accountant's Day: A student's journey inspired by his manager

Next Sunday, September 22nd , we celebrate Accountant's Day , the professional who takes care of finances and helps us understand the complexities of the world of numbers. It is a day to recognize these professionals who work tirelessly to ensure that accounts are in order and that companies are in compliance with tax laws and regulations.

That's why Gabriel Fedele , a student of Accounting, Finance and Analytics at the São Paulo School of Administration (FGV EAESP) , told us how his manager was the true inspiration for his career choice. After all, accountants are essential for the smooth running of companies and for people's financial health.

The student highlighted Mario Henrique de Mello , his manager at Banco Safra, as an example of a professional, with a strong resume, and solid knowledge of accounting, despite not being an accountant. “Mario quickly identified the value that the Accounting, Finance and Analytics course could add to my education,” he said.

Gabriel also said that his main motivation for studying Accounting, Finance and Analytics is to broaden my education and become a more complete and versatile professional. “I currently work in the FP&A area at Banco Safra, and the course has a lot of synergy with some of the activities I am responsible for at work, which helps to improve my professional performance,” he emphasized.

Check out the full interview below:

1. Who inspired you to study Accounting, Finance and Analytics?

I was inspired by Mario Henrique Vieira de Mello, who was my manager at Banco Safra. He is an exceptional professional in the areas of financial services, strategic planning and corporate finance, and has a solid knowledge of accounting, although he is not an accountant. He has a solid academic background, with a degree in Civil Engineering from POLI-USP, a postgraduate degree in Business Administration from Insper, and a Masters of Science in Leadership and Strategy from the London Business School (LBS).

2. For what reasons?

Mario quickly identified the value that the Accounting, Finance and Analytics course could add to my education. He emphasized the importance of acquiring knowledge in programming and data analysis, in addition to deepening my understanding of finance, controlling and capital markets. He also highlighted the possibility of obtaining the CRC registration, which legitimizes the accounting professional, which could be an advantage in my career.

3. What is your relationship with this person?

I had the privilege of having Mario as my manager at the beginning of my career at Banco Safra. He not only guided me professionally, but also became a friend. When I expressed interest in pursuing a second degree, Mario, in partnership with the company's HR department, worked to secure a financial incentive that would help me follow through with this decision.

4. Do you remember any phrases you heard from this person?

Mario liked to advocate “Winning Models.” He always emphasized good, successful practices that he had learned throughout his professional career. This not only helped standardize deliveries in terms of quality and appearance, but also ensured that our deliveries bore the team’s trademark. Another idea he always reinforced was the humility to recognize possible errors and act to correct them. He would say something like: “Let’s not fight the number.” He always emphasized the importance of evaluating our clients’ questions and, if there is a problem in a report, it is our role to correct it.

 5. What are your motivations for the course?

My main motivation for studying Accounting, Finance and Analytics is to broaden my education to become a more well-rounded and versatile professional. I currently work in the FP&A area at Banco Safra, and the course has a lot of synergy with some of the activities I am responsible for at work, which helps to improve my professional performance. I believe that this training will allow me to discuss accounting topics confidently, improve my analytical skills and develop new skills, such as programming, which are increasingly in demand in the market. With this solid foundation, I hope to be up to date with the best financial practices, which is crucial for anyone who wants to stand out in such a competitive market. In addition, the structure of the course itself caught my attention because it offers training that combines traditional areas, such as business and finance, with learning about emerging technologies. This integration of knowledge seemed like a unique opportunity to grow professionally in a rapidly changing scenario.
