The consequences of the climate crisis are already part of the daily lives of family farmers and organizations in the food chain. There are many cases of agricultural production losses due to prolonged droughts, heavy rains, and average temperature increases. Besides the social and economic damages, which directly affect the income of the producing families, the loss in production brings consequences for the supply of cities and changes the price of food.
It is within this context that the Cinturão+Verde (Green+Green Belt) project was born, which aims to contribute so that family farmers in São Paulo and its surroundings are better adapted to climate change. This publication is a record of the activities and results of this pilot initiative, which will last 13 months, from May 2021 to June 2022.
Chapter 1 discusses the motivations behind the project and the choice of its territory of action, the Alto Tietê Cabeceiras region. Chapter 2 presents the research conducted by the team to understand how the territory of the Alto Tietê basin is susceptible to climate change. Chapter 3 presents the seven climate change adaptation solutions for family farmers identified through a call for cases. Chapter 4 reports on the fieldwork carried out with farmers who participated in a formative journey in three workshops. Finally, chapter 5 brings some reflections on the results achieved and also to be enhanced.
