GEO Brazil 2025 Report

Since 1995, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has been carrying out an ambitious integrated environmental assessment project known as GEO (Global Environmental Outlook, https://www.unep.org/geo/). In 2025, UNEP and the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), with the support of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), are developing the second GEO BRAZIL in history, which will be launched during the Thirtieth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Belém (COP-30).
The GEO reports have an established methodology for detecting trends in the state of the environment and monitoring progress towards meeting environmental policy objectives. The GEO methodology uses a matrix of Directors - Pressure - State - Impact - Response (DPSIR) indicators as an analytical tool that allows for the organization and logical grouping of the factors that act on the environment. GEOs are important mechanisms for tackling the triple environmental crisis: climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. The production of a national GEO, such as GEO BRAZIL 2025, is a fundamental practice through which science informs decision-making. The report will strengthen the science-public policy interface in Brazil, providing government and civil society with a source of data and information on the state of the environment and its trends in various themes.

Desde 1995, o Programa das Nações Unidas para o Meio Ambiente (PNUMA) tem realizado um ambicioso projeto de avaliação ambiental integrada conhecido como GEO (Perspectiva Ambiental Global ou Global Environmental Outlook, https://www.unep.org/geo/). Em 2025, o PNUMA e o Ministério do Meio Ambiente (MMA), com o apoio da Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) e do Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas Aplicadas (IPEA), estão desenvolvendo o segundo GEO BRASIL da história, que vai ser lançado durante a Trigésima Conferência das Partes da Convenção-Quadro das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas em Belém (COP-30).
Os relatórios GEO possuem uma metodologia estabelecida para detectar tendências no estado do meio ambiente e monitorar o progresso em direção ao cumprimento dos objetivos da política ambiental. A metodologia GEO utiliza uma matriz de indicadores de Diretores – Pressão – Estado – Impacto – Resposta (DPSIR) como um instrumento analítico que permite a organização e agrupamento lógico dos fatores que atuam sobre o meio ambiente. Os GEOs são mecanismos importantes para enfrentar a tripla crise ambiental: mudança climática, perda da biodiversidade e poluição. A produção de um GEO nacional, como o GEO BRASIL 2025, é uma prática fundamental por meio da qual a ciência informa a tomada de decisões. O relatório fortalecerá a interface ciência-políticas públicas no Brasil, fornecendo ao governo e à sociedade civil uma fonte de dados e informações sobre o estado do meio ambiente e suas tendências em vários temas.
