The pandemic has increased the number of unemployed in São Paulo: there are almost three and a half million people without formal work and depending on odd jobs to survive.

Renan Pieri, economist and professor at EAESP FGV, specialized in the labor market, explains that sales and services, the sectors that employ the most in the capital, were the most affected.

In the first three months of the year, the unemployment rate rose from 12.2% in the first quarter of 2020 to 14.6%.

This means that around three and a half million people are currently without formal work across the state. Almost four hundred thousand more than at the beginning of last year, before the pandemic started.
