This short course discusses the relationship between art and politics from the 20th century to the contemporary frontiers of imagination.

Between November 24th and 28th , from 6 PM to 8 PM, the mini-course “Art and Politics: from the 20th century to the new frontiers of imagination” will be held at FGV EAESP in São Paulo. This initiative is a collaboration between FGV Arte , the Center for Critical Imagination (CCI/Cebrap) , and the Aesthetics Group of the Law and Democracy Center of Cebrap (NDD/Cebrap) . The event, free and open to the public, will promote a series of debates on the intersections between art, politics, and critical imagination in Brazil and internationally.

The opening will be led by Paulo Herkenhoff , chief curator of FGV Arte and one of the leading figures in Brazilian curatorial practice. Aimed at students, researchers, and professionals in the arts, humanities, and related fields, the mini-course addresses topics such as the emergence of mass politics, the role of propaganda, engaged art, and artistic movements that contributed to the symbolic construction of ideas such as people and nation.

The program brings together prominent names from the artistic and academic fields, including Pollyana Quintella (Pinacoteca de São Paulo), Rúrion Melo (DCP-USP/Cebrap/Mecila), Silvia Finguerut (FGV Social Responsibility), Jonas Medeiros (CCI/Cebrap), Raquel Patriota (UFRN), Charlotte Riom (FGV CPDOC), Leonardo Barbosa (NDD/Cebrap), Blanche Marie Evin (FGV Arte), and Raquel Barreto , chief curator of MAM Rio.

Over five sessions, the mini-course will explore topics ranging from curatorial wanderings and modernist debates to contemporary issues related to ethnographic criticism, first-person narration, and Brazilian music in the digital age. The central aim of the initiative is to stimulate reflections that transcend historical perspectives, fostering a dialogue between contemporary art, critical imagination, and possibilities for social transformation in a context marked by crises and uncertainties.
