Management model strengthens resilience and risk mitigation in procurement.
An article by Lilian Cristina Vieira Barbosa , Master's degree holder from the Professional Master's Program in Management for Competitiveness (MPGC) at FGV EAESP , and Priscila Laczynski de Souza Miguel , professor at FGV EAESP , published in GV Executivo magazine , presents evidence that the Covid-19 pandemic intensified companies' concerns about risks in the area of Purchasing and accelerated the adoption of resilience practices in supply chains.
Research shows that the crisis exposed structural weaknesses, such as a lack of visibility regarding suppliers, supply disruptions, and inventory imbalances. In addition to pandemics, extreme weather events and geopolitical conflicts continue to impose unexpected disruptions, reinforcing the need for Purchasing to act strategically in anticipating, mitigating, and communicating risks.
The study identified a significant increase in the adoption of risk identification, assessment, mitigation, and control processes following the pandemic. Purchasing and Supply Chain Management professionals also reported greater development of resilience competencies, such as visibility, agility, collaboration with suppliers, and rapid response capabilities.
Based on the results, the article proposes a five-step model to support buyers in the structured management of risks, strengthening preparedness, response, and recovery in the face of new crises.
