FGVces at COP30
We have a long track record of participating in the Conferences of the Parties (COP), but since 2011 the Center for Sustainability Studies at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGVces) has served as an “observer organization,” a category reserved for institutions engaged in research, teaching, outreach, and capacity-building on issues related to climate change.
At COP30, our presence will once again reflect what we do through applied research and our engagement with topics that are essential to the Conference:
- Impact-oriented research: For 20 years, we have contributed to the formulation of corporate strategies and public policies for climate change mitigation and adaptation. We also help develop fairer value chains and encourage companies, investors, and financial institutions to align their strategies with sustainability principles.
- Presence in the Amazon: We work directly in territories, including in the Brazilian Amazon. The Juruti Sustentável project, launched in 2006, generated territorial development indicators built from listening to communities affected by large-scale projects. This practice has become part of the Center’s DNA, which has carried out projects in Jirau and Belo Monte and, more recently, in the BR-319 corridor in the state of Amazonas.
- Education for sustainability: Through formal and informal teaching and learning processes, we train people to act strategically in complex systems, respecting planetary boundaries, confronting social inequalities, and reinventing people-centered organizations and economies focused on well-being and good living.
- Knowledge dissemination: Through social media, events, and media engagement, we bring the debate on socioenvironmental issues to the broader public in clear and compelling language.

This event brings together diverse perspectives around a shared vision of resilience, justice, and cultural continuity. At its core are four interconnected themes that guide the conversation and collective experience:
Climate justice and inclusive decision-making, ensuring the full participation and leadership of Indigenous peoples in charting pathways for climate and development.
Intergenerational transmission of ancestral knowledge as the foundation for cultural resilience and adaptive governance.
South–South and transcontinental cooperation, connecting voices and experiences from the Amazon, the Pacific, and Africa in a spirit of solidarity and shared purpose.
Arts and heritage as instruments of climate diplomacy, fostering empathy, dialogue, and systemic change through creative and cultural expression.
Together, these themes set the tone for the session—celebrating the land and its guardians, connecting generations and continents, and reimagining our shared future through culture and justice.

Acknowledging that the climate crisis requires consistent responses, the debate will demonstrate that corporate engagement in the face of the climate emergency must interconnect other structural pillars – such as integrity, human rights, and socio-environmental justice – positioning them as the foundations of a fair and sustainable economy.
Panelists:
Jean Michel – Executive Manager of Social Promotion at SEST SENAT
Marcela Greggo – Project and Services Manager at Instituto Ethos

COP do Povo (People’s COP)
Nov 12 | 8:30–10:00 AM | Hybrid
The session aims to reflect on and highlight civil society strategies to address future extreme events and strengthen climate resilience in traditional territories across the Amazon — a region historically marked by pressures and threats.
Organizations and community leaders will share concrete lessons from the responses to extreme droughts, criminal fires, and deforestation that affected the Amazon between 2023 and 2024. In the context of COP30, the discussion seeks to contribute to advancing climate justice — inseparable from the protection of territories and the rights of Indigenous peoples, traditional communities, and small-scale farmers.
This collective initiative is co-organized by the Independent Territorial Monitoring Network (Rede MTI), Center for Sustainability Studies of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGVces), Indigenous Territorial Monitoring Management of the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations of the Brazilian Amazon (GEMTI/COIAB), Agro é Fogo Initiative, and the Forests and Finance Coalition.

FGVces is aligned with COP30’s priority in Belém: accelerating the large-scale implementation of climate solutions, an objective anchored in 30 specific targets in its Action Agenda. To make this shift from ambition to execution a reality, there is a critical demand for practical knowledge, reliable data, and robust tools from governments, the private sector, and civil society.
Recognizing this need, FGVces is providing a strategic selection of its intellectual output, including research and methodologies, to offer the technical support required for implementing the Action Agenda.
