Considerations for a sustainable taxonomy in Brazil with a focus on biodiversity

December, 2023

This report compiles and summarizes results obtained under the SF4B project in order to contribute to the debate on sustainable taxonomies, engaging key players and producing knowledge in the context of developing a sustainable taxonomy for Brazil. Chapter 1 introduces biodiversity finance and sustainable taxonomies. Chapter 2 examines the applicability of the EU Taxonomy to the Brazilian context. Chapter 3 discusses the main results obtained from consultations with experts on a taxonomy for the agricultural sector and the environmental objective of conserving and restoring biodiversity in the Brazilian context. Finally, chapter 4 offers suggestions for some basic elements to be considered in a sustainable Brazilian taxonomy.

This report is part of the project "Sustainable Finance for Biodiversity in Brazil and Colombia" (SF4B), a project supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), and implemented by the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management (Germany), Fondo Acción (Colombia) and the Center for Sustainability Studies of Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGVces, Brazil).
