This is a short (1 hour) game to help you think about how climate change can affect civil society organisations, their staff, beneficiaries and operations. It can be played in groups of between 2 and 10 people
Step 1 – Pick an NGO (5 mins)
Read through the ‘organisation cards’ – you may want to read them out loud to save time. As a group, chose one organisation card that you find interesting, perhaps because your group has similar characteristics. Place your chosen card in the centre of the table.
Step 2 – How might we be affected? (25 mins)
Deal the ‘climate hazard’ cards to each member of the group until all six cards are gone. If some people have more cards than others, that is fine! Ask one person to read out their ‘climate hazard’ card. Thinking about the organisation you have selected, discuss:
a) the impacts the hazard might have on the organisation currently, considering who or what is particularly vulnerable to the climate hazard
b) how might this change in the future?
Then move on to the next person/hazard card. Continue reading out and discussing the climate hazards until you have finished all of the cards.
Step 3 – Prioritising risks (5 mins)
Following your discussions, sort the 6 hazard cards according to the level of risk they might present to the organisation. Place the three most significant hazards in the centre of the table with the organisation card you chose in step 1.
Step 4 – How does it affect my role? (20 mins)
Deal out the ‘role cards’, or assign them according to the interests of the participants. Share the cards if there are more than 6 people in your group.
Discuss each ‘role card’ in relation to the organisation you selected in Step 1:
a) how might the 3 priority hazards you have chosen affect each role?
b) what steps might you take to address these challenges if you were working in this role?
Step 5 – What next? (5 mins)
Having gone through steps 1 to 4, briefly discuss how your own organisation could be affected by climate hazards. Do you feel you are well prepared? Do you have enough knowledge or information?
Do you have a clear idea of what you can do to improve your management of climate change risks?
