The Center for Studies on New Developmentalism of the Sao Paulo School of Business Administration at Getulio Vargas Foundation is pleased to invite interested candidates for participating in the 6th Workshop on New Developmentalism: 40 years of quasi-stagnation in Latin-America: New perspectives and interpretations, which will be held in São Paulo, Brazil, on December 01 and 02, 2023.

The program will include, on the first day, a mini-course on the most recent advances of the New Developmentalist theory, two discussion panels - about the quasi-stagnation in Latin America and the relation among exchange rates, domestic and external savings – and a lecture of the keynote speaker. The program of the second day will embrace another lecture of the invited speaker and sessions to discuss the papers submitted and approved at the Workshop.   

We are very pleased to announce that Gabriel Palma, from Cambridge School of Economics, one of the main specialists in the development model of Latin American countries, will be the Keynote Speaker and, as stated above, he will give two lectures.

Conteúdo

Submission of papers are welcome on the following subjects: 

  • Political economy of new developmentalism (developmental capitalism x liberal capitalism, the developmental state).  
  • Why and how to manage the five macroeconomic prices (exchange rate, wage rate, profit rate, interest rate, and inflation rate) to promote economic development? 
  • Why are the exchange rate and the current account are key in the investment function? 
  • Extensions of new developmentalism (green growth strategies, economic policies to reduce inequalities).  
  • Analysis of the Development strategies of countries, particularly Latin American Countries
  • Empirical research that might test the new-developmentalist hypotheses and models.  

 

Applications 

Researchers and students are invited either to attend the workshop and submit a paper for a panel, or to attend the workshop (lectures and panels) only. 

For submissions to panels: Candidates should submit an abstract, maximum size of 500 words (excluding references). It should be sent in pdf format and must include identification of author, affiliation, and title of the article. Due date is September 04, 2023.  Results will be released on September 11. E-mail address to submissions: cnd@fgv.br. Each candidate can submit no more than one abstract as the main author and another abstract as a second author. 

Final versions of papers for accepted submissions should be sent no later than November, 20. 

Best articles may be published in the Brazilian Journal of Political Economy. 

For all interested people: All applicants shall send a short (one page) curriculum vitae, containing at least the academic degree, the corresponding institution, research interests and most relevant publications (not mandatory).  

 The seminar is sponsored by a partnership between CND-FGV and YSI-INET 

Travel and accommodation costs: Select participants (young scholars) may be eligible for partial funding stipends from YSI-INET. Please inform in the e-mail of submission if you are also applying for the partial funding stipends. Other participants must pay their expenses.

There is no registration fee in the Workshop.
